Hiding Behind Each Plan

Energy
Company 1
Fixed • 12 months
5.5¢
Here's the Catch

12-Month Term: Want to leave your contract early? Too bad. It will cost up to $200 to leave. Yep, that sounds fixed all right.
Energy
Company 2
Fixed • 3 months
5.6¢
Here's the Catch

Be careful. You will automatically be converted to a higher variable rate at the end of your term.
Energy
Company 3
Variable • 1 month
7.9¢
Here's the Catch

They gotcha with one sweet rate, but hold on here! After that one month is over, they'll charge you for another, more expensive plan.
Energy
Company 4
Variable • 3 months
10.3¢
Here's the Catch

"Say what? Regardless of usage, many plans will tack on a daily usage fee (around $4 a day)."
Energy
Company 5
Indexed • 24 months
10.4¢
Here's the Catch

Hold on! Indexed rates can be tied to anything, and formulas can vary dramatically.

12-Month Term:

Fear the Tiers:
You'll pay the advertised rate of 5.5¢ only if you use exactly the 1,000kWh rate. But if you fluctuate between the tiers (use more, use less), then your rate can double.

Give me death or taxes! In this case, taxes and fees and more fees. For example, fees for contacting support, minimum usage fees, early termination fees, etc.

This Variable Rate Plan can be a month-to-month rate that changes based on fluctuations in the markets. But a lot of those changes are nothing but the whims of the REPs who set the rates. Yep, they own you.

Not So Fast:
100% sounds nice, but it's a fallacy. 100% renewable does not mean you are using renewables 100% of the time. It means your REP is purchasing wind or solar credits for a certain amount to seem like they care. Sounds more like 100% not so good.

Over here, over there—hidden fees everywhere! Add ‘em all up, and you're spending over $200 before you know it.

Be careful. They can usually change your rate at any time, so don't blink.

Let's say you have to cancel because you have to unexpectedly move. As long as you can cough up $135, you're freed from your contract.

Companies like this one can use early cancellation fees to try and force you to stay, instead of providing superior pricing and customer service.
